The advocacy committee develops and organizes meetings, activities, and programs to further the goals and purposes of PTA. This committee is tasked with improving communications and relationships between school staff and families; educating families and caregivers on important issues related to the health and educational success of their children; and helping to make each child’s potential a reality.
All Pro Dad is a national non-profit program to support dads in their family roles to love and guide their children in their personal and academic lives. Monthly meetings, held the second Friday of each month in the media center, give Dads and kids a chance to have breakfast together and engage with their children in a guided format. The main goal is to reinforce for your child that you are involved in their educational lives.
The Art fundraiser done in conjunction with the Art teacher. Funds raised enrich the school’s art program. All art supplies for the art department come from money provided through the PTA as the local district does not provide art funding. Earnings are donated back to the school Art Department.
The Audit Committee keeps our PTA in good standing by insuring we are being good stewards of the money. The Committee meets once per month for 30 minutes to review Treasury information and ensures all is in good order.
The Book Fair takes place in February and June of each year. Book Fairs are a primary fundraiser done in conjunctions with Scholastic. The money raised from the Book Fair is used to purchase materials for the Media Center. This is very important as the Media Center is not funded with county school dollars.
The Book Fair Committee Chair orders book fair materials, oversees set up and take down including decorations and advertisement, and the day to day operation of the fair.
The Cowboy Stampede, done in conjunction with Boosterthon Fun Run, is the largest fundraiser at Southwest Elementary. The funds raised are used for educational enhancements and technology. Students will all receive a free Cowboy Tshirt as part of this event. During the Boosterthon, students seek sponsors who either make a financial donation or agree to donate a specific amount for each lap the student runs during the Cowboy Stampede. Corporate sponsors are welcome and encouraged for this event. If you know a corporation who might be interested, please connect with the Committee Chair.
The Boosterthon Committee Chair works closely with Boosterthon team and Administration to plan school day schedules and the Cowboy Stampede. The chair seeks sponsorships from the community and businesses and is an advocate for the event.
Box Tops 4 Education is a fundraiser. Parents can clip box tops off of product packaging for many of the everyday products they buy and send the box tops to their child’s teacher. Teachers submit the box tops to the Box Top Committee Chair for organizing and submission to Box Tops 4 Education. The school then receives money that each teacher can spend toward classroom supplies. Your child’s teacher will only receive funds from the Box Tops submitted to your child’s class. Brushstrokes is an enrichment program that provides prepared art activities for the classrooms to use when time is available. The Committee Chair is responsible for overseeing prepared activities for the teachers and arranging the events.
Your child’s classroom will have a designated Class Parent, identified prior to or at the beginning of each school year. They are responsible planning special events, assisting teachers and organizing volunteers throughout the year. Class parents take photos at special events for the yearbook. Class Parents also attend PTA meetings to help keep parents up to date.
If you are interested in volunteering in your child’s classroom throughout the year, be sure to reach out to your child’s Class Parent and let them know your availability and interest.
The Coupon Book Fundraiser is a primary fundraising event. Your child will bring home information on coupon book sales right after school starts. Children and families have the opportunity to sell The Attraction Book, filled with coupons to local restaurants and businesses. The funds raised are used for educational enhancements and technology at school.
The coupon book fundraiser committee begin work in the summer months each year. The committee organizes works with the vendor, organizes an assembly with the Administrative Staff, and receives and distributes information and products to students.
Cowboy Roundup is a spring fling community event for students and families. This is a terrific event for bringing together our local Southwest Elementary community.
We need help to make this a success. We are currently seeking a Committee Chair for this event. If you are interested, please reach out to the PTA President.
Southwest Elementary is proud of the many different cultures at our school. We are always looking for opportunities to share our cultural diversity and teach our students about the world in which we live. The Cultural Arts Committee plans fun, educational assemblies for students throughout the year. Multicultural Night, held in the Spring, brings families and students together to celebrate one another, sample food, see traditional dances and demonstrations.
Field Day is a two-day event held in May of each year and gives students the opportunity to put their physical education skills to work.
Reflections is a National PTA art program. Students create original works of art in response a student-selected theme. The theme for the 2019-2020 program year is Look Within. Students submit their completed works of art in one or all of the available arts categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, Visual Arts.
Students and families are invited for a fun meal with Friends and Family throughout the year at area restaurants. The restaurants donate a portion of the proceeds from sales to our school. Invite everyone you know to join us - eating in or drive through - just tell them to say they are supporting Southwest Elementary that night and we get a percentage of the sales!
The school beautification committee plans events for families and staff to join together in improving the school environment and surrounding grounds. Throughout the year, the committee takes on projects from decorative painting the front walk and hallways to creation of spirit markers on the school grounds.
The SWES Spirit Rock is available to SWE parents and guardians for rent to celebrate special occasions such as a student birthday.
The staff at Southwest Elementary school are a cornerstone of the school’s success. The Staff Appreciation committee supports and celebrates the staff throughout the year, recognizing staff birthdays and life events. Additionally, a week-long celebration honors our staff for Staff Appreciation Week each Spring.
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Committee supports the STEM program at Southwest Elementary School. Activities include classroom support, fundraising and material donations to help make the program a success. Families have a chance to participate in STEM with their students on STEM Family Nights in the Spring and Fall of each year.
Students at Southwest have a multitude of talents, not all of which are on display in the classroom. The Annual Talent Show is an opportunity for students to showcase their special talents for the school community. The Talent show is held in the Spring and is open to students in the 3rd through 5th grades. We are always amazed at all of the unique skills and abilities the students display!
The Volunteer Committee recruits and organizes volunteers to support all of the PTA Committees. The committee also provides recognition and support to the volunteers that make the PTA's work possible.
The Yearbook Committee works directly with the yearbook vendor to organize and produce the yearbook. They reach out to the students and their families for photo and content contributions to provide a wide representation of the students' school experience. All of this effort results in a terrific keepsake for our students and their families!
