The Southwest Elementary PTA has an enthusiastic spirit of dedication to our children.
Principal Michelle Thigpen, along with Assistant Principal Chris Sciandra and Assistant Principal Jeanelle Lindsay, are committed to maintaining the high expectations and outstanding reputation of Southwest Elementary School.
Southwest is a school you can be proud to call home. Come feel the excitement in the halls and become an integral part of your child’s education at Southwest!
You Are the Key to Success
To make the school the best it can be, we rely on an incredible team of volunteers who give their time and efforts throughout the year. The PTA Board is subdivided into committees that support important initiatives enriching the educational lives of our children. Each committee relies on fundraising and volunteers to accomplish their goals.
Annual PTA fundraising initiatives supplement those monies provided by the public school system for the educational needs of the children at Southwest. These funds are crucial for providing things such as new books for the library and software programs for challenging our children.

The Southwest Elementary PTA works hard each year to raise funds for our school. Where does that money go?
PTA dollars are used for:
Spending varies each year based on the school community's needs. This chart shows spending by category for non-fundraiser associated expenses in the 2018-2019 school year. Every effort is made to insure that PTA dollars are maximized for the benefit of students, families and teachers and staff.
The focus for 2019-2020 is to provide educational enhancement opportunities for the whole child. We want each child to feel like Southwest is their home and to pursue their passions at the school in the areas of Art, Music, STEM, Physical Education as well as all areas of traditional academics.
Three times per year, the PTA hosts a general session meeting open to all where we actively seek community participation and engagement. It is a friendly environment to meet other parents and school staff.
The PTA Board also holds a monthly business meeting on the first Monday of each month at 6:30 PM in the Media Center. These meetings last approximately 45 minutes. Meetings are open to all PTA Members.
If you are not a PTA member, you may join at the PTA meeting or just come to observe and then decide. Remember, you must renew your membership each year. Thank you in advance!
The Guilford County Council of PTAs provides inspiration, information and instruction for the local PTA member units and the community in which we serve. We are at the center of the communication network which consists of National PTA, NCPTA, local units, school board, state and district superintendent, administration, parents, businesses and children. Through county council programs, meetings, emails, newsletters and media, we can instruct, challenge and influence these groups to action promoting welfare of children and youth.
